Improver Off Piste

Conditions are generally good for off-piste skiing from Christmas through to the end of April. I can't guarantee knee-deep powder and blue skies every day, but I can promise you variety!

For this course, you need to have skied off piste before, preferably for a week or two, and you now want to move on to the next stage. All that's needed a good grounding in on & off piste technique, good motivation, and a sense of humour! There's no minimum fitness level required, but the fitter you are, the more you'll enjoy it.

Courses are flexible to suit the snow conditions, your ambitions and abilities, but typically run like this:

  • Day 1: Stance Analysis, and the Way a Ski Turns. Refresher session on Avalanche transceivers.
  • Day 2: Moving through mountain terrain -adapting your skiing style to the conditions.
  • Day 3: Route choice and group management, multi-casualty avalanche searches.
  • Day 4: Technical mountain terrain - use of the rope, crampons and ice axes
  • Day 5: Day tour in the Chamonix area, accessing remote areas with up to 2 hours of uphill. Touring skis can be rented in Chamonix.
  • Day 6: Heli-skiing in Italy or Verbier. It's not just for millionaires!

Roping in to a steep couloir

"Many thanks for a superb week. I learnt more about off piste skiing in a few days than any amount of standard ski-school could have taught me, and found myself skiing down much steeper slopes in much deeper snow than I would have ever dared do previously."
Stephen Reid - 6 day Off Piste Course 2003
