Ski
Touring combines the skills of skiing and mountaineering to
take you into the heart of the mountains. Away from the lift
systems, we have all the challenge of the mountains: the fitness
needed to walk uphill, extra skills to climb up as well as
ski down, navigation, avalanche awareness
.. and with
those challenges are the rewards - skiing above the clouds
in a remote environment, the fresh tracks leading from the
top of the mountain, and the welcome beer in an alpine hut
after a full day in the mountains.
Ski
touring was invented in the European Alps with its wide variety
of terrain and comprehensive network of mountain huts. The
High Level (or Haute) Route from Chamonix to Zermatt is
the most well known, but the potential for mountain exploration
on skis from as far apart as Val d'Isere to Grindelwald and
from Chamonix to Cortina. To start ski touring, you need to
have had some experience off piste. There's no minimum fitness
level, but the fitter you are, the more you'll enjoy it!
Most
multi-day touring takes place when the mountain huts are open
from mid March to the end of April. Day tours from a base
in the valley can happen anytime from December to the end
of April, and there are a few huts that are open right through
the winter. Itineraries are flexible to suit your ambition
and abilities. Below are some examples of what I have on offer
this winter:
- Day
Tours from the Chamonix Valley
- Introductory
Touring courses from 3 to 6 days
- Ski
Safaris - touring without tears!
- Multi-day
hut-to-hut tours including the Haute
Route
I
can handle up to 6 skiers depending on where we go and what
we do. The smaller the group, the more attention you get and
the more likely that groups will be compatible. The larger
the group, the more you learn from each other and the cheaper
it is!
